Defined Dreams: Guitars, Guns, and Airplanes

When it comes the dreams, start small.  You don’t have to hit a home run right away.  Most of us have been taught to settle for what everyone else is doing, and so we do.  We’re bored and stuck.  So how do we get unstuck?

About a month ago my brother Adam, who is a 17-year-old junior in high school, was stuck in a car dealership with me waiting for a scheduled service to be completed.  After 3 minutes he was obviously bored, and it was that I’m-stuck-like-in-school bored.

So I asked him to make a list of all the cool things he would like to do, big and small.  In about 5 minutes he came up with about 10 ideas, and from there I had him narrow his list down to the three that he could start immediately.

1). Restart guitar lessons: he called immediately and made an appointment.

2). Buy a paintball gun: after looking for a week he found the coolest paintball gun I have ever seen and bought it for $185.

3). Travel: this was originally a longterm goal, but he realized that he could go visit our older brother in Ohio during spring break.  He bought a plane ticket for cheap (which ended up being a hassle, but an adventure), met up with some friends from home in Ohio, met a girl from Syracuse (let the texting begin), and wound up in the ER due to a broken blood vessel in his nose that would not stop bleeding: the perils of first time flying.

Before he left, Adam said to me, Most people have no idea how easy it is to do cool things. He is absolutely right.  Now, did Adam get smarter in the last month?  You could argue that he did because he learned to do things he had never done before, but as far as IQ, the answer is no.

He made a choice the draw his own map and follow it!  He defined the dreams and then found a way to make them real: dream >> plan >> adventure.

Do yourself a favor: define what you would love to do by making a list.  Write 3 things that you can do in the next month in the comment box below this post and make it real.

Mine is: 1). Call physical therapy for injured right knee.  2). Swim 3 days before Sunday.  3). Keep posting one entry per day.  I will write in tomorrow’s posting about how I did.  I hope you will too.
