Taught To Wait

Ahem! Tom, please wait in your seat for the bell.  Tom, please wait until I have collected all the papers.  Tom, please wait until it is your turn.  Tom, it is now time to do your seat work.  Tom, please be quiet.

Look back on your education.

Did it make you the type of person who asked lots of questions?  Did it make you the type of person who charted out your own course?  Did it make you the type of person who constantly engaged with those around you to seek out relevant problems?  Did it make you the type of person who planned out your work?

OR

Did it make you the type of person who waited to for the teacher to pose questions to you?  Did it make you the type of person who sat nicely in rows and waited for the bell?  Did it make you the type of person who showed up and waited for someone else to hand you your work for the day?  Did it make you the type of person who waited on others to engage you?

Most schools teach conformity.  Ahem, Tom!  Please don’t think for yourself.  Finish up your ditto, because I have another one for you.  (Not too many Coolness Point for that.)

The Tom in this story is meant to be Tom Sawyer.  Reread this entry with that in mind.
