The World Is A New Place

In times of change learners inherit the earth, while the learned find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists.

-Eric Hoffer

You are preparing yourself for something, and it may not be a job that you can’t even imagine at this point.  The world is changing so quickly that a lot, and I mean a whole lot, of things that you may be learning are not going to have a lot to do with where the world is going to be.

No matter what, keep on learning useful things.  The old model was to get an advanced degree in a field like history and then coast until retirement, because history changes only so fast.  This is a bad strategy in today’s world.

What are the skills that will be indispensible in the next ten years?  It will be people who can adapt, change, and do new things.  Those who want the world as it was are going to be left with skills that aren’t useful.

Study abroad is great because it forces you to change the way you think and adapt to new situations.  It also opens you up to the world that is beyond your personal experience.   If you can do this at a young age, then hopefully you will be better equipped when you are old.  Or, you could be equipped for a world that no longer exists?
